| | | The Ampulla and Anointing Spoon
The Ampulla, which is believed to date from the 14th Century, is a hollow vessel made of gold in the shape of an Eagle, with a head which unscrews. It contains the Holy oil used in the Anointing ceremony, which is poured into the Anointing Spoon into which the Archbishop dips his fingers and anoints the Monarch on the head, breasts and hands.
The Anointing Spoon is believed to date from the 12th Century, and is the oldest piece within the Crown Jewels regalia. It is made of silver gilt and is set with four freshwater pearls. | | |
